Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia; it is the largest city in the country. Phnom Penh has numerous attractions in the city. The Royal Palace located in Phnom Penh was built with the assistance of the French in the year 1866. The Royal Palace has a Khmer architectural style and is the official residence of the king of Cambodia. The palace has become his official residence following his return from exile to Phnom Penh in 1992. All though much of the palace is open to the public the king's residential quarters are closed to the public. A visitor may wish to visit the Royal Throne Hall in the palace.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha which is also called the Silver Pagoda was reconstructed in 1962. The temple has a 90 kg gold Buddha, an emerald Buddha and the floor consists of over 5000 silver tiles. One should not expose ones knees or shoulders in the temple as this is considered to be disrespectful.
The Wat Phnom Pagoda can be found 27 meters from the center of Phnom Penh on a hill. This temple was constructed in 1373 and enshrines four Buddha idols.
The National Library of Cambodia can be found in close proximity to Wat Phnom. The building has a French Colonial Era architectural style to it and was constructed in 1924.
